European Constitutional Group

European Constitutional Group

The European Constitutional Group was formed in the summer of 1992 in the belief that the 1996 Inter Governmental Conference should aim to put in place a coherent constitution for Europe. In 1993, the Group published a Draft for a European Constitution that received considerable attention throughout the Union, both supportive and critical.

Today, with the European Convention working on a new Treaty for the European Union, the Group's aim to stimulate work on a European Constitution seems closer to its realization. Therefore, the European Constitutional Group has decided to reconvene in order to both monitor the work of the Convention and adapt its own Draft to the new developments in Europe.

Members of the European Constitutional Group are independent of governments, Community bodies and party organizations.
