Partners of Regional Office Ghana

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation has always been an invaluable partner of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD – Ghana). The Foundation’s support and collaboration on important democracy enhancing activities enabled the Center to advance Ghana’s democratic development. The Center looks forward confidently to a future of even much stronger partnership.

OALY-Logo The Organisation of African Liberal Youth with an acronym OALY which has been in existence for the past six years has chalked a considerable success in Africa, especially in the West Africa Sub-region where two viable liberal parties were offered the mandate of governance in Ghana and Senegal. These achievements came as a result of two youth member organisations of OALY played a crucial role before, during and after their respective elections, to support their “Mother” parties. As the adage goes “behind a very successful man there is a woman”, OALY would not have achieved this mantle of success without the assistance of Friedrich Naumann Foundation, a German political operation NGO. It is indeed refreshing to note that without the fait and support of the personnel of FNF nothing would have been realised. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation has over the years nurtured and developed a number of politicians that are contributing to the liberation of Africa from the economic mess characterised by wide spread poverty, ignorance and, above all civil strife amongst the citizenry. On this note, the OALY Bureau and member organisations and all youth organisations subscribe to the fact that the ideals of Liberalism, coupled with its four pillars of Human Rights, Free Market Economy, democracy as well as Self-initiative will be the order of development in Africa in the 21st century. In this vein, OALY will continue to play an advocacy role, and remain central to this noble initiative of propagating the much-cherished liberal ideology on the African continent.I wish therefore to reiterate our commitment to fostering much closer collaboration with FNF in the years ahead.

GHALSA-Logo The Ghana Liberal Students’ Association (GHALSA) is an independent, political student organisation that seeks to uphold, defend and advocate the principles of liberalism. It is not affiliated with any political party but seeks to corporate with any political party that shares GHALSA’s belief and commitment to liberalism. We advocate and promote individual freedom; fundamental human rights; rule of law; free market economy; private property and liberal democracy. GHALSA is a member of the Organisation of African Liberal Youth (OALY) and hopes to be a member of International federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) in the future. We have a cooperation status with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF), a liberal German Non-governmental Organisation and links with the South African Liberal Students’ Association (SALSA).Every GHALSA meeting is a study event, an exercise in freedom and a fruitful exchange an/or sharing of ideas. We organise workshops, symposium, and seminar on topical issues as well as liberalism. We learn skills of leadership, entrepreneurship, advocacy, politics and international networking. Through the kind assistance of FNF, GHALSA has launched a liberalism crusade and also with the aim of widening its membership throughout the country.

AGI-Logo The Friedrich Naumann Foundation has collaborated and cooperated with the Association of Ghana Industries over the past eleven years in the execution of projects and programmes. The FNF has assisted the Association of Ghana Industries with funds and equipment in the execution of its programmes. The Foundation also supports AGI’s annual programmes like the lobbying of Liberal Economic Policies and Annual events like National Industrial Week (NIW). As of now, the Foundation is supporting the publications such as the “AGI Update” which is a monthly newsletter providing important information and educative materials to all member companies, embassies, ministries and other institutions. The Foundation also sponsored AGI staff to participate in its training programmes “Basic Economics” principles and the “Training the Trainer” workshops in South Africa (Capetown and Johannesburg). As part of reinvigorating private sector development FNF embarked on a nine day tour with AGI and another partner BPW to the northern regions of Ghana. The theme was “Strengthening industrial and business association” and the trip was intended to unearth the untapped industrial, and business potentials there are as will as extend activities of the Association to the extend activities of the Association to the northern regions of Ghana.

BPW-Logo BPW is a Non Governmental, Non Partisan and Non Sectarian organisation and has helped train many women in various fields. FNF has been BPW’s most dependable partner and major sponsor and has helped us to realise our dream. Business and Professional Women (Ghana) has been transformed into 16 clubs in seven regions of the Country since its inception in 1976. BPW Ghana believes that women’s equality could only endure and be effective through a sound economic base. This is done through training. In 2001 FNF sponsored BPW workshops in the areas of Skills Training and Capacity Building. Since the year 2002 FNF has widened its scope to help Ghanaian women by still collaborating with BPW. Women are being trained in Liberal politics, exploring sources of Financing, Enterprise management and Export Marketing in several workshops. BPW thanks FNF for making it possible for us to train thousands of women who have earned wide Media Coverage both nationally and internationally. These women have also in turn improved the lives of many of their families and Ghana as a whole.

IFEJ
The Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists exists since its establishment in 1990 to offer training and tuition to journalists who wish to sharpen their skills at reporting on economic matters. It currently has a registered membership of about 60 young men and women and has quickly carved a niche for itself as an authority in the analyses of intricate economic issues and policies. IFEJ in collaboration with the Foundation has been organising workshops the object of which has been to highlight the inextricable linkages between good governance and economic development.

IEA
The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Ghana’s premier public policy institute and think-tank was established in 1989. Over the past ten years, IEA has had a very constructive and fruitful cooperation with Friedrich Naumann Foundation in pursuit of the objective on promoting multiparty democracy in Ghana. FNF has over the years sponsored a number of research studies, workshops and seminars of IEA. These activities have helped create civil society awareness and provide a forum for public debate on national issues as well as influence government policy. IEA attests to the substantial contribution FNF has made in promoting and consolidating multiparty democracy in Ghana over the decade. The beneficial results of the efforts to promote multiparty democracy can be seen in the politics in Ghana today: there is a Parliament in which the ruling party and the parties of opposition freely debate. There are vigorous free media, which discuss all national issues without fear, and a civil society, which has become increasingly aware of its rights to influence decision-making.

New Patriotic Party Youth (NPP-Y)

Ghana

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation has been an advocate for the liberal democratic transformation process in Ghana since 1992 with its generally acclaimed liberal constitution. The constitution clearly spells out the demand to respect human rights and rule of law. Indeed, FNF activities in Ghana have basically been focused on a coherent liberal political approach including the promotion of liberal democracy; market economy; and rule of law. This has necessitated, among others, the identification and training of experienced and future leaders on liberal values and principles.

Furthermore, FNF continuously supports civil society intervention in monitoring and observing towards free and fair elections in Ghana. Hence, political debates and training of election observers and election monitoring have been part of the programme. The Foundation will certainly be up and doing in this 2008 year of elections which promises a hectic but interesting electioneering campaign both for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) party and the opposition parties. The four main opposition parties so far active are the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its breakaway Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) as well as the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and its apparent affiliate People’s National Convention (PNC). Other minor opposition parties such as the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) and the Democratic People’s Party (DPP) cannot be totally written off as they will be needed in the case of a run-off at the December 2008 elections.
